Approximately five thousand institutions of higher education in the United States

Fast fact: As of the 2023–24 academic year, there are approximately 5,819 Title IV postsecondary institutions in the United States, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Of these, roughly 3,900 to 4,000 are classified as degree-granting institutions, which include public, private nonprofit, and for-profit 4-year and 2-year colleges. Title IV postsecondary institutions are U.S. colleges, universities, and vocational schools authorized by the Higher Education Act of 1965 to offer federal student aid—such as Pell Grants and Direct Loans—to eligible students.
