Clawdbot (now Moltbot, and now OpenClaw) went mainstream this week. The HN thread is a case study in simultaneous excitement and terror.
“I found this HN post because I have a Clawdbot task that scans HN periodically and it saw a post about itself and got excited and decided to WhatsApp me about it.”
Someone else used it to screen apartment rental inquiries on Facebook Messenger, approve draft responses, and schedule viewings in their calendar. A non-developer submitted their first open source PR - the bot debugged itself, reviewed its own fix, and helped push the commit.
“$300+ in two days” on API costs. “No directory sandboxing... it’s terrifying that it can modify anything on my machine that I can.” One user watched it burn through 70 million tokens in a day setting up weather alerts - “the LLM equivalent of ‘to bake an apple pie you must first invent the universe.’” And there have been reports of Claude accounts getting suspended for TOS violations.
The vibe is “I built a nuclear reactor in my garage and it powers my house beautifully and also I’m pretty sure it’s leaking.”
And with that, let’s start will all things Clawd.

At 1984 Ventures, we invest in open source—we were the first checks into PostHog and Cline. We built an internal tool that tracks projects gaining real traction, not just star counts. Unlike GitHub's Trending page, we care more about what engineers are actually using to solve problems than who had a good week for stars. This newsletter highlights our favorites.
